Barbara Weiss

I have a master's degree in counseling psychology from the California Institute of Integral Studies in San Francisco. My areas of study included couple and family therapy with an emphasis in transpersonal psychology, which basically supports spiritual aspects of the human experience. In 2003, I became a licensed mental health counselor (LMHC) and a Child Mental Health Specialist (CMHS.)

In my practice, I follow a strengths-based model while utilizing a combination of psychodynamic, systemic, transpersonal, and cognitive-behavioral techniques. Essentially, I believe in a holistic approach, in that all of our experiences (physical, emotional, mental, spiritual, and social) are integral in our unique compositions. Typically, our early experiences and traumas show up in our current lives, and can manifest themselves in a myriad of thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. I also highly value the direct interaction with my clients and how their own earlier experiences play into therapy and our therapeutic relationship. I believe in client empowerment through knowledge of the treatment process and direct participation in planning treatment goals.

I have worked with adults, youth, couples and families for over 10 years in a variety of outpatient and private practice settings. In addition, I completed my internship and post-internship at the Haight Ashbury Free Clinic in substance abuse counseling. For the past seven years, I served as the Director of Counseling for a community-based mental health and chemical dependency treatment agency in downtown Seattle. During this time, I maintained a caseload of adults, youth, and families in addition to administrative oversight of the clinical programs. My specific areas of interest lie in work with couples and family counseling, adolescent counseling, and the healing of chronic and acute trauma, utilizing visualization to facilitate this process. I have extensive training and experience in these areas, and regularly attend workshops and seminars to expand my knowledge and understanding of the complexities of the human existence.
